I like beer. It makes me a jolly good fellow…” Those classic Tom T. Hall lyrics were part of the soundtrack of my childhood, filling the air with a cheerful anthem that celebrated the simple joys of life. Fast forward to today, and my love of beer has evolved into a full appreciation for the artistry of Nova Scotia’s craft breweries. It all started with one pint: Boxing Rock’s Wild Axe Pilsner.
This crisp, refreshing pilsner not only introduced me to the world of craft beer but also set the stage for my ongoing love affair with locally brewed goodness. And as fate would have it, Boxing Rock became more than just a brewery for me—it’s also a place where we found friendship with owner, Emily, (and may have got her hooked on axe throwing!) and we joined forces with Boxing Rock so you can throw axes with them in Shelburne too! Boxing Rock has also been a great supporter of my axe throwing journey, that has taken me around the world. I have to admit, few things pair better than the thrill of axe throwing and the reward of a perfectly crafted beer.
Nova Scotia: A Craft Beer Paradise

Nova Scotia has carved out a reputation as a haven for craft beer enthusiasts. From the South Shore to Cape Breton, every corner of the province offers unique brews and welcoming taprooms that celebrate local ingredients and creative flavors. Here are a few favorites to add to your list:
1. Boxing Rock Brewing Company – Shelburne
Start where my craft beer journey began. Whether you’re sipping a Wild Axe Pilsner, their award-winning IPA, Puck Off Blonde Ale and Temptation Red, or something seasonal, Boxing Rock delivers with every pour. They even took home the CBA Brewery of the Year in 2024 on the National level! Don’t forget to try axe throwing while you’re there—it’s the ultimate South Shore AXEperience.

2. Good Robot Brewing – Halifax
If you’re looking for a brewery that blends quirky creativity with fantastic beer, Good Robot Brewing Co. is the place to be. Known for their eclectic brews like Tropical Storm and Diablo Mexican Lager, this brewery offers a fun and inclusive atmosphere. Their taproom and beer garden are perfect spots to unwind and enjoy the vibe of Halifax’s north end.
3. Tatamagouche Brewing Co. – Tatamagouche
This family-owned brewery combines small-town charm with big-time flavor. Try their North Shore Lagered Ale, their Deception Bay IPA or my favourite, the Hippie Dippie Pale Ale.
4. Big Spruce Brewing – Cape Breton
Nestled in Nyanza, Big Spruce is a must-visit for hop lovers. Their Kitchen Party Pale Ale is a Nova Scotia classic, and the brewery itself offers stunning views and a true taste of the island’s spirit.

5. Tusket Falls Brewing – Tusket & Halifax
A true gem in Nova Scotia’s craft beer scene, Tusket Falls Brewing Company offers a unique range of beers. Whether you’re enjoying their hazy IPA or a refreshing sour, their taproom in Tusket is a cozy spot to relax. If you’re in Halifax, their second location offers the same great flavors with a city vibe.
The Joy of Drinking Local

Drinking local isn’t just about enjoying great beer—it’s about supporting the community. Each pint tells a story of the people who brewed it, the farms that supplied the ingredients, and the vibrant culture that keeps the taps flowing.
When you raise a glass of craft beer in Nova Scotia (sociable!), you’re not just drinking a beverage; you’re embracing the creativity, passion, and heart of the province. It’s the same spirit that inspired Tom T. Hall to sing about beer—and it’s the same joy that makes every sip a celebration.
Axe Throwing + Craft Beer = A Perfect Pair

If you’re looking for an experience that embodies the Nova Scotian spirit, look no further than combining axe throwing and craft beer and we do just that at Timber Lounge in Dartmouth and Moncton, and of course, at Boxing Rock in Shelburne. There’s something truly special about pairing the thrill of axe throwing with the smooth satisfaction of a local craft beer. It’s not just about unwinding after hitting the bullseye (although that’s pretty great too); it’s about supporting local and the camaraderie that comes with sharing a pint and throwing an axe!
Craft beer brings people together, just like axe throwing. It creates a sense of connection, fosters great conversations, and highlights the importance of community—all values that the Timber Lounge holds close.
I Like Beer. I Like Nova Scotia.
Tom T. Hall was right: beer really does make us jolly good fellows. But here in Nova Scotia, it does so much more. It connects us to our communities, inspires creativity, and invites us to explore every corner of this beautiful province.
So next time you’re planning a road trip or just looking for a new favorite brew, remember: We like beer! Drink local. Love local.
Cheers to craft beer and the stories it inspires. What’s your favorite Nova Scotia brew? Share your recommendations—I’m always on the lookout for my next great pint!
